2010 Spring Craft Weekend

April 23-25, 2010

Washington, DC

The weekend will include visits to private craft collections, dinner catered by a major chef, live and silent craft auctions, visits to galleries, craft symposium, artist open studios, and the Smithsonian Craft Show, featuring artists from emerging to masters.  A special free events is the annual Saturday morning symposium sponsored by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the James Renwick Alliance.  Special guests will be Mark Sfirri, Randy Johnston and Yoshiko Wada, who will receive the JRA's Distinguished Educator award, and the topic is How Craft Makes its Way into the World.  Stay tuned over the coming months for news on events and participating artists.  All events are open to the public with ticket and offer fun, excitement and interest for those new to studio crafts as well as experienced collectors.

Friday, April 23

A Touch of Ireland in Washington, DC
Craft Leaders Caucus Day.
9:00 – 3:00
Open to Craft Leaders Caucus members and Patrons.

The day begins with a celebration of Irish Craft in preparation for the Caucus study tour to Ireland in May 5-13.  The day will consist of visits to local collections with lunch at the Irish Embassy.

Friday Evening: Patron’s Dinner.

Open to patrons.

A festive dinner by renowned chef Carla Hall will celebrate the future of craft.  The evening will have a festive theme of the circus complete with performers and palm readers.

The evening will conclude with a dessert reception and silent auction featuring over 40 craft objects by established and emerging American artists.

Saturday April 24

How Craft Makes its Way into the World
JRA Distinguished Craft Educators’ Symposium.
Open to the public. Free.
McEvoy Auditorium
Smithsonian American Art Museum
10:30 – 1:00

The symposium features the James Renwick Alliance 2010 Distinguished Craft Educators: Randy Johnston, ceramics, Mark Sfirri, turned wood, and Yoshiko Wada, fiber.  They will discuss How Craft Makes its Way into the World. Paul Greenhalgh, Director of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, is the moderator.  Other panelists are Robert Devers, Tamara Laird, and David Yurman.

Dinners with Craft Collectors in the Washington Area

A magical evening will begin with cocktails and a live auction and end with dinner at a select group of private homes with wonderful collections throughout the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. 

Sunday April 25 

Distinguished Craft Educators Brunch and One-of-a-Kind award.

Open to all JRA members.
10:30 – 1:00

The Sunday Morning Brunch will honor the James Renwick Alliance 2010 Distinguished Craft Educators.  Upon receipt of the award, each artist will give an illustrated talk on his life’s work.
